Environment
The MMF's environmental activities focus principally on the areas of substance restrictions, e-waste and energy efficiency. In carrying out this work the association has put together a set of key principles that form the basis of its various inputs to governments and other stakeholders. The MMF believes that these principles should underpin the development of environmental policies and legislation in relation to the telecoms industry.
The MMF's key environmental principles are as follows:
- Environmental policies should be based on sound science.
- Legislation and regulation should be internationally harmonised, should promote and adopt harmonised standards and should be consistent with respect to its scope, exclusions and exemptions.
- Legislation and regulation should specify the overall goal/s to be achieved rather than mandating specific actions or arbitrary targets.
- Products should be assumed to be compliant when entering the market and not require any third party intervention.
- Products should not be subject to any additional labelling requirements.
- Product recycling is a shared responsibility involving all stakeholders, and any legislation or regulation should attribute obligations to those who are best placed to comply.
- Product recycling schemes for mobile phones should operate in compliance with the United Nations Environment Programme(UNEP) Mobile Phone Partnership Initiative (MPPI) Guidelines.
